Dear Esther... INSTALL THIS GAME IMMEDIATELY

We will be releasing a new episode of The Derp show very soon, but I wanted to say a couple of words about Dear Esther. Well, not so much say as shout myself hoarse directy into your ear over a megaphone turned to 11. All hyperbole aside, this title is a modest little work of pure genius, and I feel everyone owes it to themselves to play it. (This won't take very long at all, its even shorter than Portal.)
I could try to say a lot more about Dear Esther, but I feel like the about page on the website really articulates it well:

“A deserted island… a lost man… memories of a fatal crash… a book written by a dying explorer.”

Dear Esther is a ghost story, told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional game-play the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly uncovered when exploring the various locations of the island, making every each journey a unique experience. Dear Esther features a stunning, specially commissioned soundtrack from Jessica Curry.

Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it’s because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial – What happened on the motorway – is the island real or imagined – who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach and the tunnels under the island. Or then again, they may just not be, after all…

Schedule? What schedule?

So we're still trying to figure out a day that works to do this show regularly, and Sunday is not it. However, Monday is looking like a solid contender. And we haven't been sitting here on our duffs, either! There's a fancy new look in the pipe, and maybe even an actual show intro brewing...

Here's a teaser still frame to hold you over till upload time.

The Derp Show Ep.4 - Changes

It pissed off the neighbors but we did it anyway! Graham, Kroze and I lashed together something resembling a podcast, henceforth retitled "The Derp Show". Consequently, this week's topic is "Changes".

A derp by any other name...

So a couple of interesting new developments... According to Kroze, we're not the first derpcast on the block. This unfortunately led to our application to iTunes being rejected, so we're probably going to do some kind of namechange for the show. I figure its not that big of a deal since we're only 3 episodes and 1 video in, so this can be chalked up to teething pains.

There will be a new episode of *mumblemumble* up later today so rejoice! However, since our interim hosting at pulley has limited space, we will be replacing episode 3 when the new one goes up. So grab it while you can! It may not be available for a while, until we get a better way to archive old videos. The audio should remain available throughout though.

What's next!

We've had some delightful feedback from everyone about our latest Derpcast, which I couldn't be more pleased about. Well, I could be more pleased but then I would be stuck in a euphoric coma, and then there wouldn't be any more episodes.

In any event, I wanted to let you all in on what our future plans entail. Derpcast will continue updating every week with a new episode, giving away the audio and asking a very modest sum for the video to keep the wheels of our diabolical internet machine running. Kroze is hard at work getting our content into the iTunes store, which will hopefully make downloads more convenient for everyone.

In the mean time, I'm cooking up some other content that I will be slotting into various days of the week, until we have something approaching an actual update schedule!

In the mean time, have some meaningless scribbles.

Derpcast Episode 3 - Design

So Kroze, Cam and I got together and did a new derpcast. In this episode we're testing out a lot of new things, so its only appropriate that the topic is "Design".

Where have I been?

For those of you curious about what I've been up to, hopefully this post will illuminate a few things.

I stopped working on Crapshots quite some time ago much to a lot of people's disappointment. Truth is very simply that I kind of felt like I was running out of steam with that particular project, and rather than drag it along into an abyss of mediocrity, I put it on hiatus. I have tenuous plans to revisit it for a second season, but beyond that there's no date.

Some of you may have noticed that I've been appearing in much fewer Loading Ready Run videos, and that like Jeremy I've moved on the bio page from crew to contributor. While I've been continuing to show up in episodes of Feed Dump, I've scaled back involvement with weekly videos to try and put some thought and work into the heap of unfinished junk that is my personal projects.

Which brings us to this blog and some of its content. It took me forever to get this stupid thing off the ground, for a multitude of reasons... But its up now, and my hope is that this will form a crucial foothold for me to actually make good on some of the promises I've made to myself and people who like my stuff.

To tease the everloving crap out of you, here's a couple of plans I have on the go:

The Tower, Book One: Discovery

With Shards providing a bit of a taste of my concept universe, the Ruin Nation, I've been working on writing up the script that will become the first of the three to four volumes that will make up the central narrative proper of The Tower. Plans are still in the air about who will draw it, but groundwork is shuffling along again.

Last March of the Iron King
One short story did not make it into Shards, due to its attempted last-minute inclusion and deadline problems. However, I have stayed in touch with the artist and we are working together to bring you this tale as a stand-alone oneshot. When this one is finished, I think you will really like it.

The Derpcast
With some promising results from the first couple of test episodes, I have plans to make a weekly Derpcast. The concept is pretty simple, me and one guest physically in the room chat over a simple concept, getting additional input from a second guest brought in over Skype. The show will be mostly silly, but offers me a chance to touch on a few things I have some serious feelings about. Audio episodes will be free for download, and to keep the derpcast going we will offer video downloads either for microtransaction or subscription, both of which would be cheap like dirt.

I'll be posting details on what I'm up to creatively as well as hosting old and new content of many shapes and sizes. So stay tuned, and I hope you enjoy!
